SUPPORTING CONSERVATION

LOCAL INITIATIVES WE SUPPORT

PLETTENBERG BAY MARINE ANIMAL STRANDING NETWORK

We provide a mechanism for stranding network members to raise funds to cover their operating costs. As volunteers who give their time, energy, and personal resources, the network plays a vital role in responding to, stabilising, and transporting injured marine wildlife to rehabilitation centres and veterinary clinics. We also respond to strandings and rescues whenever possible and manage the program’s database.

PLETT WHALE HERITAGE AREA

The Plett Whale Heritage Area is a globally recognised marine conservation zone along South Africa’s Garden Route, designated by the World Cetacean Alliance. It protects critical habitats for whales, dolphins, and marine life, promoting sustainable tourism, research, and community engagement. The area highlights Plettenberg Bay’s rich biodiversity and commitment to marine conservation and responsible ecotourism. We support their work by educating ocean users about responsible marine tourism.

ECO EXPLORER

As a tourism service company, Eco Explorer promotes responsible tourism and environmental sustainability through high-impact positive awareness campaigns by empowering tourists and operators to make a difference to conservation right where they are. With an emphasis on sustainable travel and supporting local conservation initiatives, they are creating a holistic new approach to travel. We support them through joint awareness programs that provide learning opportunities for locals and visitors alike to appreciate biodiversity in our area.

RAPTOR RESCUE PLETT

We provide research and conservation expertise to this incredible organisation that makes a HUGE difference in raptor conservation in our area. Our Conservation Director provides advice and input on rehabilitation cases and sits on the board of directors for Raptor Rescue. We assess and ring all birds before they get released back into the wild and provide advice when required. We also act as responders, heading out on raptor rescues when needed.

PLETT SHARK SPOTTERS

The Plett Shark Spotters program enhances beach safety and marine conservation in Plettenberg Bay by monitoring shark activity along the coastline. Using elevated lookout points, trained spotters identify and track sharks, providing real-time alerts to swimmers and surfers. The program promotes coexistence between humans and sharks through research, public education, and sustainable ocean safety measures. Our interns assist by collecting data and, at times, using existing datasets to research the effectiveness of the program.

PLETT HOPE SPOT

The Plett Hope Spot Program, part of Mission Blue’s global network of marine conservation areas, recognises Plettenberg Bay’s rich biodiversity. It promotes ocean protection through research, education, and community involvement. By safeguarding marine habitats and species, the program fosters sustainable tourism, stewardship, and conservation initiatives to ensure a healthier ocean for future generations. As the founding chairman of the Plett Hope Spot, our conservation director plays a role in advising local initiatives for Mission Blue.
